Improving the Quality of Life of an Entire Town Through Fitness

Proposed GetFIT Griffith 8 Mile Challenge

Premeires September 2012

The 8 Mile challenge is a competitive run that should draw participants from around the region. A 4 mile walk will be an option where participants will stop at sponsor stations throughout the city. This event is recommended for the month of September so it is a cooler month and a logical progression from an existing Griffith 5K, the Hometown Run.

The 8 mile distance allows the race to start and end at Central Park. The Calumet Regional Striders http://www.calstrider.org/ a running club are active race participants and if this race is an annual event it will be promoted and likely added to their Gold Cup series. The route will visit all 4 Griffith parks, Griffith schools, several churches and many businesses.  It winds through 4 difference neighborhoods and 3 business areas including Downtown Broad Street, 45th Street and Ridge Road.

The Challenge is one of the longest in the region and intended to push people toward high levels of fitness. Participants are encouraged to participate in the Hometown Run 5K in August as both a way to physically prepare and actively benefit our community.
